Yarn Along

This week’s picture courtesy of my desk at work! Some calls I just listen better when I’m doing something with my hands 🙂 I’ve been inspired by some other folks on blogs and Instagram who are working on paring down their WIP piles, so I dug out a couple of my own. A scarf kit (in the picture) that I bought ages ago and never started, and a tunisian project that I knew I was never going to finish, that got frogged and the yarn repurposed for a new project.

Reading: Not pictured (since it’s a Kindle book), I’ve been working on The Heiress of Winterwood. I haven’t really been blown away by the writing, but it’s a sweet Regency romance.

Well, I made absolutely no progress on the cross-stitch this week… M and I were in Clemson this past weekend for the football game, and I didn’t have time! Without really realizing there was a crisis, we made it back just in time to avoid getting caught by the gas shortage. I’ve been able to work from home, but I hope things get sorted out soon. I did get some reading in this week, though. I picked up this little novella, The Slow Regard of Silent Things, that i’ve had on my shelf forever, and flew through it! It really makes me want to re-read the Kingkiller Chronicles from the beginning.

Hi y’all. It’s been awhile. I’d planned to take a break for my wedding and honeymoon… but not quite this long!

I haven’t had much motivation to pick up my crochet hook since I finished my wedding flowers. But that means that I’m moving along like gangbusters on my cross-stitch project! It’s really starting to look like something now.

I started reading Devil in the White City, and it’s very interesting but… I don’t know if I’m in the mood for another non-fiction right now. I think I need to look for a couple of fiction-y, girl-y reads to cleanse my palate 🙂

I’ve had some time to do a little dual crafting this week. I was able to make a little progress on my cross stitch, as well as start on a project with some gorgeous yarn I got in Asheville while on my bachelorette weekend. After much deliberation, I’m doing the water lily shawl. It’s my first foray into love knots, and i’m struggling! Not much reading this week after I finished my book last week.

I was home in South Carolina for a couple of wedding-related things this past weekend. I did my hair and makeup trial with the lady who will be in charge of those things on the big day… that was quite fun be able to picture how I’m going to look! I also met with our DJ to finalize details with him. I had some down time in the evenings and was able to start on my cross-stitch. Slowly but surely! I also finished up Feed by Mira Grant last night. It took me awhile to get into it, but holy cow! I could not put it down the last couple days. Really fun read, if you’re into zombie apocalypses.

The flowers are done. I repeat, the flowers are done! Not DONE, done, but they’re all crocheted, and have stems. The stems just need to become bouquets and corsages.

Needless to say, I’m taking a break from crocheting. I’m starting a different kind of stitchery project, from Satsuma Street. I haven’t gotten much reading done lately, currently in between books.

I’m joining Ginny again this week & sharing what I’ve been crocheting and reading.

I was able to make it to my church knit & crochet group this week, so I snuck in a little preemie hat to donate. Otherwise, though, my attention’s been focused on crocheting and assembling wedding flowers. I’ve got the checklist to end all checklists to keep track of what’s done and what’s left.

Over the weekend, I started reading one of the books that I got from M for Christmas. It’s all about introverts and how to handle being one when it’s extroversion that’s really valued. I assume she’ll get into more into introversion; currently she’s still going through the history of how the U.S. got to be this way. It’s really fascinating (it also ties in with our cultural fascination with movie stars), but it also just makes me really frustrated! I think we were better off when there was more of a focus on character rather than personality.

Hi again.

Has it really been since August? Life just keeps on keepin’ on. Thanksgiving and Christmas have come and gone. I’ve finished some projects (I really want to show those off, too!) and I’ve started some new ones. I bought a house! So, certainly not quiet.

Wedding planning has been in full swing for a while, and lately all my crochet has been centered around that. I’ve got a completely batty plan to make all the wedding party flowers — you can see a couple examples of the boutonnieres. And I’ve got the cake toppers finished (that’s Leia & Han), I only need to figure out some sort of stand to attach them to, so they don’t get all full of cake!

I really missed reading, and so I’ve made a goal this year to read at least 10 minutes a day. Some days I get it, some days I don’t. But moving to my new house has increased my daily commute a good bit, and so I’ve discovered podcasts and audiobooks. It seems a bit worrisome to me to count audiobooks as reading… but at least I am consuming books, right? The latest one I’ve finished is The Girl on the Train.

It feels good to be back. Today I’m joining Ginny for her weekly Yarn Along. I probably won’t be posting as much as I was before; it was starting to feel like work, and I want what I choose to share to be meaningful. But i’ll be posting again.

Secret project status: I am Finished with the brown yarn! And with only 1 full ball + a little extra leftover. I did, however, just panic-order more grey and blue yarn because there’s no way that I’ll have enough of that. Hopefully the dye lots aren’t wildly different. I’ve planned out a new schedule for myself to see if I can get this project done by October. I have a business trip coming up so I’m hoping the flight time and the evenings in the hotel (with nothing else to do) will give me plenty of crochet time.

This week has been so busy, I couldn’t even tell you if I’ve picked up a book at all.

I hope you’ll join me on Ginny’s blog & share what you’re working on and reading!

Sunflowers

Christmas Alphabet cross-stitch

Today’s bit of work is blocking the last main panel for my secret project. Don’t get me wrong; there’s still a lot of crochet left to be done on that (like the borders on the last 2 panels, and joining the panels together, and the final border and picots all the way around everything…) but it’s still a milestone, and it feels good that i’m plugging along.

I’m moving through Wendell Berry at a glacial pace. His writing is a bit more dense than anything I’ve attempted recently, so I have to read pages at least twice, sometimes 3 times, before I’m satisfied I’ve understood what he’s trying to say. Needless to say, that doesn’t make for great bedtime reading, so I’ve been sneaking in a few pages of Stephanie Plum #13 right before bed 🙂

The sunflowers were a spontaneous purchase at the grocery store the other day, and they are just brightening the heck up outta my living room! I love em.

And drumroll… guess what I finished! My winter alphabet! And in plenty of time to get it framed before Christmas! *throws confetti* I reckon it needs a good ironing, but I’m not really experienced with finishing cross-stitch projects. Can I just use an iron on it like normal? Or is there a better way to give projects a good pressing?

I hope you’ll join me on Ginny’s blog & share what you’re working on and reading!
