The only thing I really added to my Christmas decorations this year was an advent calendar.
I’ve got it hanging up along the divider wall between my living room and my kitchen, using some baker’s twine and mini clothespins.
Originally, the plan was to make a felt advent calendar (you know, the kind where all the tree ornaments are in pockets & you velcro them to the tree one day at a time?), and I had bought a pattern and everything. (Sidenote: if you’re looking to do something like this, the pattern I linked to is fantastic. Very detailed instructions.) Only, I didn’t get to it.
Each day is a quarter sheet of paper, I used some pretty sturdy matte photo paper. On one side, I put the day:
On the other side, I used the ornament patterns from the set I’d purchased, and drew a picture on each.
Around the picture, I wrote a bible verse for each day, using this list I found on Pinterest. A note here, it became clear that the verses were pulled from a KJV Bible, and as I was using the Catholic Bible, some of the excerpts ended in weird places. I ended up looking up the verses in both, and using the equivalent from the Catholic Bible. Only a couple needed “serious” tweaking.
I’ve loved spending a couple minutes in the morning before I leave for work, flipping over the current day & reading the Bible verse. It’s helped me keep the spirit of the Advent season and remember what Christmas is truly about 🙂
